Targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction until 2030

A draft legislation aiming at the reduction of CO2 emissions at 40% by 2030 was adopted by the European Parliament. This is the case for the transportation sector as well, with an intermediate target of cutting emissions by 20% by 2025.

The European Parliament calls for cars with less emissions by 2030, the implementation of measures to accelerate the promotion of electric vehicles, and support from the European storage manufacturing industry, so that the market share of electric vehicles and low emissions vehicles to be increased.

MEPs recall that greenhouse gas emissions from transport sector in the EU continue to rise significantly. In order to meet the commitments agreed at the COP21 in 2015, the reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from the transport sector needs to be accelerated and reach zero emissions by 2050.

At the same time, the automotive industry is evolving rapidly, particularly in the electrification sector. If European industries fail to keep up with the necessary energy transition, they risk losing their leadership, say MEPs.

For examples, fines will be put in place for manufacturers whose average CO2 emissions exceed the European targets.

Manufacturers will also need to ensure that zero or low emissions vehicles (electric vehicles or cars emitting less than 50 grams of CO2 per kilometer) account for 35% of the market share of new car and light truck sales by 2030, and 20 % by 2025. From 2025 onwards, manufacturers will have to report on the life cycle of CO2 emissions of new cars on the market, using a common methodology.

By the end of 2019, the European Commission should propose legislation to provide consumers with accurate and comparable information on fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and emissions for new cars.
